Cross Platform Visibility

What We Measure

A business may appear frequently on one AI platform, rarely on another, or be mentioned without being prominently recommended. AI systems may also rely on very different sources when forming their answers.

The AI Visibility Index therefore evaluates visibility across four core dimensions.

Cross-Platform Visibility

Does the business appear consistently across different AI search and answer environments?

AI platforms do not necessarily produce the same recommendations.

A business may be highly visible within one environment while largely absent from another.

Where multiple AI platforms are included in an Index, we examine the consistency of a company’s visibility across those environments.

Free assessment. Approximately 5–7 minutes.

How Each Market Is Tested

Every AI Visibility Index begins with a clearly defined:

Industry
Geographic market
Research period
Prompt set
AI platform set

For example, an Index examining plumbing companies in Greater Victoria may include prompts representing several types of real consumer intent.

These might include:

“Who are the best plumbers in Victoria, BC?”

“Recommend a reliable plumber in Greater Victoria.”

“Who should I call for emergency plumbing in Victoria?”

“Which Victoria plumbing companies have a strong reputation?”

“Who installs hot water tanks in Greater Victoria?”

The objective is not to repeatedly ask the same question using slightly different wording.

Instead, the prompt set is designed to represent the different ways a real customer might research, compare and select a provider.

Businesses Are Discovered Through the Results

The AI Visibility Index is not designed around a predetermined list of winners.

Businesses are primarily identified through the observed AI responses themselves.

When the tested AI systems mention, cite or recommend businesses in response to the standardized prompt set, those entities become part of the observed competitive landscape.

Where appropriate, additional known market participants may also be monitored to understand whether established businesses are consistently absent from AI-generated recommendations.

This approach allows us to measure who AI is actually surfacing, rather than simply testing a hand-selected list of companies.

Standardized Testing

Within each Index edition, the same core prompt set and testing framework are used across the selected AI environments.

Results are collected during a defined research period so that businesses are being compared against the same general market conditions.

The specific:

  • AI platforms tested
  • geographic boundaries
  • industry definition
  • number and type of prompts
  • research dates

From Observations to an AI Visibility Score

These measurements are combined to provide a comparative indication of each business’s observed AI visibility within the tested market.

The resulting score is intended to make relative visibility easier to understand.

An AI Visibility Score is not a quality score.

It does not measure workmanship, professional competence, customer service, value, safety or whether one company is objectively better than another.

It measures observed visibility within AI-generated search and recommendation environments during the stated research period.

AI Visibility Is Dynamic

  • AI platforms and models change
  • websites are updated
  • new content is published
  • reviews and reputation signals change
  • third-party citations appear or disappear
  • business information changes
  • competitors strengthen their digital presence
  • AI systems gain access to new information

For that reason, each AI Visibility Index should be viewed as a snapshot in time, not a permanent ranking.

The research date shown on each Index is an important part of interpreting the results.

Why Results May Differ Between AI Platforms

One platform may strongly recommend a business that another platform barely mentions.

This can happen because AI systems differ in the information they can access, the sources they rely upon, how they interpret a query and how they determine which entities to include in an answer.

Those differences are precisely why Cross-Platform Visibility is an important part of the Index.

Being visible to one AI system does not necessarily mean a business is broadly visible across the AI discovery landscape.

What the Index Does — and Does Not — Tell You

Which businesses AI systems are currently surfacing.

How recommendation visibility is distributed within a market.

Which businesses demonstrate stronger cross-platform visibility.

Which sources and citations frequently appear around AI recommendations.

Where established businesses may be significantly underrepresented.

How the competitive AI visibility landscape changes over time.

The Index Does Not Determine:

Which business provides the best service.

Which company a consumer should ultimately hire.

Whether a business is professionally qualified or appropriate for a specific job.

Whether an AI system’s recommendation is factually correct.

Whether a company will appear in every future AI-generated response.

Independence & Commercial Relationships

Businesses do not purchase their position within an Index, and payment is not used to improve a company’s ranking.

Chief AI Advisors may separately provide AI visibility, digital authority, search, automation or advisory services to businesses that appear within markets we study.

Where a material commercial relationship could reasonably affect the interpretation of a published Index, it will be disclosed.

Corrections & Business Information

We welcome factual corrections involving items such as:

Business name
Website
Location
Service area
Business status
Entity identification

A factual correction does not guarantee a change in ranking because rankings reflect the AI responses observed during the stated testing period.

Where appropriate, corrections may be incorporated into future editions.

Why We Created the AI Visibility Index

Traditional search remains important, but consumers increasingly have the ability to ask AI:

Who should I hire?

Which company would you recommend?

Who is trusted for this particular problem?

Instead of presenting a page containing dozens of possible websites, an AI system may provide only a handful of recommendations.

That creates a new competitive question for established businesses:

Is AI able to understand, trust and recommend you?

The AI Visibility Index was created to make that emerging landscape more measurable and transparent.

Market Visibility vs. Business Readiness

It tells us which businesses are appearing within observed AI recommendations and how their visibility compares with competitors.

The Chief AI Business Diagnostic asks a different question:

How prepared is your individual business for the AI era?

The Diagnostic examines broader areas including:

AI Efficiency Opportunity

Where AI and automation could reduce repetitive work, recover time and improve operations.

AI Visibility Readiness

Whether the business has the clarity, authority and digital signals that help AI systems understand and potentially recommend it.

Digital Foundation

Whether the website and broader digital presence support search visibility, AI visibility and conversion.

Together, the Index and Diagnostic provide two different perspectives:

The Index shows the competitive landscape.

The Diagnostic examines the individual business.
